This seminar engages the fields of environmental history, cultural anthropology, and postcolonial literature in expanding the role and imagination of the night in architecture. Moving past an elusive search for true darkness, it addresses the contemporary night—with all its conflicts and contradictions—as a site that charges architecture with the urgency to overcome the Western metaphors of light and darkness. Recognizing the night as a space rather than a time, the seminar unsettles the current interchangeability between ‘night design’ and ‘light design’ by introducing themes such as the militarization of the sky, the gentrification of darkness, the modernization of sleep, the redistribution of labor, and the transformation of monsters and ghosts. The class is structured with two alternating weekly components: lectures paired with short writing assignments, and workshops paired with drawing exercises, culminating in a comprehensive final project. Critical to this organization, then, is a commitment to the joint practice of researching, writing, and representing darkness in ways that might confront the discipline from its shadows.
