Guided by the wisdom of herders and their goats, the Path of Nightrise is a 0.8-mile herding trail that links several villages in southern Lebanon to the Litani River. Cutting through war-scarred terrain, it reclaims the night as a space of refuge, shielding against both natural and military perils. This project draws on the remarkable night vision of goats, whose dilating pupils have long guided villagers through minefields and marked time in darkness. Over generations, people have mastered this practice, watching the pupils shift from slits to circles as night deepens. Similarly, this path transforms the landscape around it into a territorial clock, where moving shadows chart the passage of time. Lines recorded at different intervals by Abu Musa, a local goatherd, and his goat Barq inspired a series of stations I designed. Each station marks the passage of time and anchors stories of the region’s rich nocturnal heritage, bridging land and sky.
